The APRS-IS digipeater at RIT, that places Rochester area APRS stations on the map for the world-wide APRS network, has been replaced with a newer server (thank you Lee-N6UDP)!
In short time, this server will be placed on a UPS. It is our goal to get that UPS on emergency generator power.

This Thursday 9/25, 7:00 PM will be our September ARES/RACES meeting. We meet at 50 Prince Street, Red Cross HQ, in Rochester. More info can be found at the bottom of this e-mail.
This month, we have Jim Maxwell from the Monroe County Health Department will be talking to us about the County's Public Health Emergency plan. Jim is tapped with coordinating the County's Points of Dispensing (POD) response plan, to which we have a part in helping provide communications in case of a public health emergency.
We also plan to talk about EmComm East, our emergency communications conference that wrapped up this past weekend (what an awesome experience!!!). We also plan to debrief the recent Ginna drill and hospital communications exercise.
For ARES/RACES members, there will be a nursing home evacuation drill next Wednesday, October 1. This drill will be a test of the Joint Regional Mutual Aid Plan, our newest served agency partner. We are in need of operators the morning of 10/1. We have been asked to provide communications locally, and "control center" communications between Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo. If you are available, please let me know ASAP.
We hope to see you there!

American Red Cross Responds to ARRL Concerns Regarding Background Checks |
|
Written by Jeff Wigal

|
In November 2007, ARRL President Joel Harrison, W5ZN, wrote to the American Red Cross (ARC) regarding concerns voiced by ARRL volunteers. In 2006, the Red Cross stated it would implement background checks that included, among other things, a credit check and a "mode of living" check for its staff and volunteers, including ARES volunteers providing services to the Red Cross during disasters. ARRL saw these portions of the background check as unneeded and inappropriate for ARES service.
In a letter dated May 8 of this year, Armond T. Mascelli, ARC Vice President for Disaster Response Services replied to President Harrison: "I can now report back to you that [these] actions have been completed and changes have been instituted which I trust resolves the concerns detailed in your letter. This effort took considerably more time and attention than originally envisioned, but I believe the results will now benefit our respective organizations.

145.29 Repeater Down for Repairs |
|
Written by Jeff Wigal

|
Thursday, 13 December 2007 |
I've been informed that the 145.29 repeater is currently down for repairs.
As per our operational plan, we would use the following repeaters, should we be called up:
- Primary: 146.88 (-) K2RRA
- Secondary: 146.61 (-) 110.9 Hz / 444.45 (+) 110.9 Hz N2MPE
With the snow coming down, I thought it might be best to make sure we are all are aware of the change.
Our net meets on the 146.88 (-) tonight at 9pm, so no changes with that.
Let me know if you have questions. Thanks--
