Monroe County (NY) Amateur Radio Emergency Service

Monroe County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES)® is an amateur radio public service organization based in Monroe County, New York, and is open to all licensed amateur radio operators.

We are a program of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national membership association for amateur radio operators in the United States. We also work closely with the Rochester Amateur Radio Association.

We participate in training and emergency exercises so that we can serve other agencies during times of communication failure. Although the primary purpose of ARES is to provide emergency communication, ARES members also routinely provide non-business communications support to other public events.

We meet on the fourth Thursday of every month, 7:00 PM, at the Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross, 50 Prince Street, in Rochester, New York. We also meet on the air on the second Thursday of each month, 9:00 PM on the K2RRA 146.88 (-) repeater.

We have an e-mail list that we use to keep members informed. To join the list, click here.

ARRL releases statement on Red Cross background check policy PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jeff Wigal, WY7Q

ARRL -- the  National Association for Amateur Radio, has released a position statement Active Imageregarding the implementation of a background check procedure by the American Red Cross. The statement was released to address ARRL members' concerns prior to a March 31, 2007, compliance deadline the Red Cross has set. The application of the background check policy to Amateur Radio operators providing communication services to the Red Cross -- either as Red Cross volunteers or as Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) members -- is the subject of continuing discussions between the ARRL and the Red Cross. Therefore, the position statement is subject to change. The ARRL will announce any such revisions  and updates on this Web site.

Locally, nothing has changed regarding background checks for ARES members.  Our local policy remains as follows:
  • ARES members who have no other affiliation with the Red Cross are not required to submit to a background check
  • ARES members who serve in an additional capacity as a Red Cross volunteer must undergo a background check (chances are you already have).
