Monroe County (NY) Amateur Radio Emergency Service

Monroe County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES)® is an amateur radio public service organization based in Monroe County, New York, and is open to all licensed amateur radio operators.

We are a program of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national membership association for amateur radio operators in the United States. We also work closely with the Rochester Amateur Radio Association.

We participate in training and emergency exercises so that we can serve other agencies during times of communication failure. Although the primary purpose of ARES is to provide emergency communication, ARES members also routinely provide non-business communications support to other public events.

We meet on the fourth Thursday of every month, 7:00 PM, at the Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross, 50 Prince Street, in Rochester, New York. We also meet on the air on the second Thursday of each month, 9:00 PM on the K2RRA 146.88 (-) repeater.

We have an e-mail list that we use to keep members informed. To join the list, click here.

Monroe County ARES had a barking good time providing safety communications for the Tenth Annual Barktober Fest, a benefit for the Humane Society at Lollypop Farm.

Barktober Fest featured dog obedience classes, agility demonstrations, pet portraits, a doggie day spa, activities for the kids, and two large vendor tents selling everything imaginable for your pet.

Monroe County ARES was pleased to provide communication services for the event, which featured a 5 mile run for humans, and a 1.5 mile walk in the woods with both pet and owner.  Coverage for the winding road race was provided by 9 stationary operators and two roving bikes.  ARES members "embedded" themselves into the crowd of 700 people walking through the woods after the completion of the 5 mile road race.

Highlights for the day included assisting a walker in distress on the 1.5 mile walk, and watching one of the canine participants relieve himself on the tire of "Bike 1".

Thanks to the following operators for participating:  David Stanwix KC2ZMX, Jon Dickason N2JAC, Michael Bowen KC2BTW, David Hassett K2SQI, Joe Walker KA8WJH, Chuck Blocher KC2IQV, Vic Gauvin K1PY, Carolyn Gauvin N2YPM, Greg Michels KC2GXV, Fred Miller WO2P, Judy Stonehill N2KXS, J.D. Dermody N2OYG, and Jeff Wigal WY7Q
